Edward Winter Enamel Box, Brass, Hinged, Cleveland School, Mid-Century Modern. Small hinged brass box with an enameled lid, signed "Winter" and hand-illustrated on the verso of the lid. White chevron pattern over a dark copper ground. Probably 1940s or 1950s. Wood-lined interior. Burgundy felt underside retains the remnants of an illegible retailer's decal.

Acquired in Cleveland in the 1990s.

Edward Winter (1908–1976) trained at the Cleveland School of Art and then in Vienna under Josef Hoffmann. Returning to Cleveland in 1932, he gained access to the industrial kilns of the Ferro Enamel Corporation and used them to work at a scale enameling had never reached. He is a central figure in twentieth-century American enameling and a leading name of the Cleveland School.

Good: Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Chip to the enamel at the left front corner (photographed). Heavy corrosion to the brass on one short side panel (photographed). Unevenness in the glaze on the lid.
